Critical Reasoning Strategies: A 4 Step Method
Here is the method in one paragraph. Before you look at a single answer choice, do four things in order: identify the conclusion, the one claim the author wants you to accept; map the evidence offered for it; name the gap, the unstated leap between evidence and conclusion; and predict what the right answer must do about that gap. Only then read the five choices, hunting for your prediction. Test takers who go straight to the choices let wrong answers do their thinking for them.
The rest of this post walks the four steps through one worked example and decodes the question stems you will meet. First, where critical reasoning sits on the exam.
Where does critical reasoning live in the Verbal section?
Critical reasoning is one of the two question types in Verbal Reasoning on the GMAT Focus Edition. The section runs 45 minutes, contains 23 questions, and is scored from 60 to 90, the same scale as Quantitative Reasoning and Data Insights (mba.com, 2026). The other question type is reading comprehension. Sentence Correction was removed when the Focus Edition replaced the Classic exam (mba.com, 2026), so argument analysis now carries a large share of your Verbal score. GMAC does not publish a fixed split between the two types.
Each critical reasoning item is a short argument, usually a single paragraph, followed by a question stem and five choices. The topics are ordinary: a business plan, a city policy, a research summary. No outside knowledge is wanted, and bringing your own is a reliable way to miss. What are the four steps?
The method has one governing rule: finish your own analysis before the answer choices get to speak. Wrong choices are written to sound reasonable, and reading them first invites them to reshape your read of the argument. The steps run in a fixed order.
- Identify the conclusion. The conclusion is the single claim the rest of the argument exists to support. Find it by asking which sentence the author would defend if challenged. Words like therefore, clearly, and should often mark it, but position does not: conclusions open arguments as often as they close them.
- Map the evidence. List what the author actually establishes, usually one or two facts. Keep it literal. What the evidence suggests is not part of the map; what it states is.
- Name the gap. An assumption is an unstated claim that must be true for the conclusion to follow from the evidence. Say the gap in your own words: the author treats X as if it proved Y. Nearly every wrong answer lives outside this gap.
- Predict before reading the choices. Read the stem, then state what the right answer must do: widen the gap, close it, or state it outright. Only now read the five choices, and match them against the prediction instead of judging each one from scratch.
How does the method work on a real question?
The argument below was written for this post, in the style of a standard weaken question.
Last year, the Harwick office of a national accounting firm moved its staff to a four day workweek. Since the change, revenue per employee at Harwick has risen 15 percent, while revenue per employee at the firm's five day offices has not changed. Clearly, the shorter week has made Harwick's accountants more productive, so the firm should adopt the four day week at every office.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?
- A. Several employees at the firm's five day offices have requested transfers to Harwick.
- B. Four day workweeks are becoming more common across the accounting industry.
- C. Shortly before the schedule change, Harwick's three lowest-billing accountants left the firm and were not replaced.
- D. Employee satisfaction scores at Harwick have risen since the schedule changed.
- E. Harwick is the smallest of the firm's offices.
Step 1: identify the conclusion
The word clearly flags it: the shorter week has made Harwick's accountants more productive. The recommendation to expand the policy is downstream of that causal claim, so the causal claim is what the right answer will attack.
Step 2: map the evidence
One fact, with a comparison attached: revenue per employee rose 15 percent at Harwick and stayed flat at the five day offices. Note what is not established. Nothing about hours billed, work completed, or how any individual accountant performed.
Step 3: name the gap
The author treats a rise in revenue per employee as proof that each employee became more productive. That leap needs two things to be true: nothing else changed at Harwick that could move the ratio, and revenue per employee is a fair stand-in for productivity. Neither is stated, so both are open flanks.
Step 4: predict, then read
The stem asks for a weakener, so the right answer should widen the gap, most likely by supplying another explanation for the rise. With that prediction in hand, the choices fall quickly. A, B, and D never touch the revenue figure, and E describes a standing fact that cannot explain a change over time. Only C fits: if the lowest billers left and were not replaced, revenue per employee rises mechanically, with no one working any better. The answer is C, and the search took seconds because the prediction did the filtering.
What is each question stem actually asking?
Stems repeat from test to test, and each maps onto the gap in a specific way. Learn the mapping once and step 4 becomes nearly automatic.

The inference row deserves a second look, because it inverts the usual job. In weaken and strengthen questions the argument has a hole and you work with it. In an inference question the statements are treated as solid ground and the choices are on trial. Applying gap-hunting there produces confident wrong answers.
How do you make prediction automatic?
Practice untimed first. For two weeks, write the conclusion and the gap as full sentences before looking at any choices, even on easy questions, because questions with no time pressure are where the habit is cheapest to build. Then add the clock: 45 minutes for 23 Verbal questions works out to just under 2 minutes each, and the method fits that budget once the analysis phase is fast. Prediction feels slower in week one. It is faster by week three, because it turns reading five choices carefully into checking five choices against a standard.
